Sushi Ran "Kagami-Biraki" Ceremony

4:30 PM New Year's Day

Sushi Ran has announced that they will be celebrating on January 1 with a special ceremony called "Kagami-Biraki,” the traditional sake barrel-breaking for the holiday.

The Sushi Ran announcement says that "Kagami-biraki is a ceremony performed at celebratory events in which the lid of the sake barrel is broken open by a wooden mallet and the sake is served to everyone present. It represents an opening to harmony and good fortune. In the traditional Japanese culture, the ceremony is a means of beseeching the gods to grant good health and fortune on special occasions, such as the New Year."

The restaurant will feature special displays called kadomatsu, the traditional Japanese decoration of the New Year, which are placed in pairs in front of homes to welcome ancestral spirits and spirits of the harvest.

After the barrel breaking ceremony at 4:30 PM, the restaurant will serve dinner from 5:00 to 10:30 PM.

If you want to get a head start on the celebration, the wine and sake bar at Sushi Ran will also be open for beverages until midnight on New Year's Eve..

Sushi Ran is located at 107 Caledonia St.  A map to the location is on our Sushi Ran page.

Special Event: Ceremony New Year's Day at Sushi Ran

Fast Forward SummaryTM:  Super-popular sushi place just north of downtown Sausalito, draws a faithful clientele of regular customers from San Francisco and from points north.  Some people drive a long ways to get here, but it's also only five blocks from the Sausalito Ferry pier.  Not cheap, but very good.  Patio seating in nice weather.  Make sure to get a reservation to avoid a long wait.  The satellite bar across the walkway from the main seating area has a more narrow selection than the main dining room.

Google Map Instructions:  Use the "+" and "-" buttons to zoom in and out, the arrow keys to scroll the map, and the SAT button to see the satellite view.

Sushi Ran: The Details

This restaurant, situated away from the Bay and downtown in an area that caters to local residents, has managed to pull off a very difficult trick: in some months they've made the Top 5 rankings in both the Special Occasion and the Casual categories of the ComeToSausalito.com online surveys.  It does not have the big views or the large dining rooms of the downtown destinations, but it does attract a fiercely loyal audience from both sides of San Francisco Bay.

Service has been excellent on my visits.

I strongly recommend getting reservations here.  During dinner especially you can have a long wait if you just decide to drop by.

The restaurant and satellite bar (which has a more restricted menu) are on either side of a passageway mid-block on the uphill side of Caledonia St. near the movie theatre.

How ComeToSausalito.com Reviews are Different

Small Sea Lion 2We use a One to Ten "Sea Lion" system to rate restaurants, where ten Sea Lions is the highest possible score.  The Benjamin Bufano statue of a Sea Lion that graces the edge of the Bay in Sausalito is an enduring symbol of the city.
