Last Minute Sausalito Reservations for Valentine's Day

.

Restaurants with Tables Still Open for Valentine's Day

Still haven't had a chance to get that Valentine's Day dinner reservation?  We've been researching the dwindling supply of tables at top Sausalito restaurants to help you out.  As of 9:00 PM on February 12, 2009, here are our suggestions.  It looks like some places have called in extra staff and are opening banquet rooms etc., since new openings have turned up.

These times and openings for these five places will probably change rapidly, so you should call them ASAP.

Angelino's --  (Sea Lion 15 px 8 Sea Lions)  Up through 5:30 PM -- time to catch a romantic sunset with a view of the Bay!

Buckeye Roadhouse --  (Sea Lion 15 px 9 Sea Lions)   4:30 PM.  A favorite romantic spot of ours.

Cacciucco -- up to 7:00 PM and 8:30 PM on

Horizons -- up to 6:30 PM (think about the Bay view and sunset!) and 8:00 PM on

Poggio --  (Sea Lion 15 px 9 Sea Lions)  3:30 PM is open.  Another of our personal favorite places to go, classy and romantic.

Here are some other leads we got on popular Sausalito restaurants by asking around:

Avatar's  -- A casual "Indian comfort food" tradition and a perennial leader on our Restaurants ranking page.  Call soon and there's a good chance they'll be able to hold you a table.  Very considerate service when you're trying to find a place to eat.

Sartaj India Cafe -- From about 7:30 on there's a good chance you can get a table here.  The owner treats people like family.

Caffe DiVino -- (Sea Lion 15 px 7 Sea Lions)  The back room continues to have tables available for Valentine's Day dinner, although the front room is all booked.  The music is great in front, but it's actually easier to talk in the back room.

Il Piccolo Teatro -- Brand new this year.  There are a few tables open scattered through the evening.  If this sounds good to you, call soon.  They go out of their way to try to help people find a reservation time that will work, and customer service quality here is high.

Paradise Bay -- (Sea Lion 15 px 5 Sea Lions)  Some tables are still available for Valentine's Day dinner.  Another place that treats guests well when you're trying to get in at a popular time.

Fish -- They don't take reservations (or credit cards) at this informal "line up to order from the counter" ultra-fresh seafood place.

Enjoy your romantic evening!

Buckeye Roadhouse --  (Sea Lion 15 px 9 Sea Lions)   4:30 PM

Watching the Amgen Tour of California Bike Race in Sausalito Feb. 16

Watching the Amgen Tour of California Bike Race in Sausalito Feb. 16

Atoc_sausalito_tour See our main Amgen Tour of California Stage 2 in Sausalito page for a full listing of all the events surrounding the race.  Lance Armstrong and Levi Leipheimer are scheduled to appear at some events, and as more details become available we'll update these pages.

Fast Forward SummaryTM:  The race starts at 8:30 AM on Monday morning, February 16th in downtown Sausalito in front of the Spinnaker Restaurant.  They are religious about starting on time, so get there early.  The route calls for two parade loops from the Spinnaker up to and around Caledonia Street before the race heads south on Bridgeway en route to the Golden Gate Bridge (the first time that a bike race has ever crossed the Bridge), and we have times and route details below.  Streets will be fenced off, but spectators watch from the sidewalks.  Spectators on Caledonia and on Bridgeway between Spinnaker and Caledonia will get to see the cyclists go past twice, and another great spot is the steep uphill climb to the Bridge.  You want to pick a spot to watch the racers and get there early -- the cyclists are going incredibly fast, and if you try a last minute change in location you could miss it all.  With road closures there is no way to catch up to the race by car to see them go by again.

Golden Gate Ferry will be scheduling special ferry service on race day, leaving the San Francisco ferry terminal at 7:00 AM for a 7:30 AM arrival in Sausalito.  We have complete Sausalito Ferry information here.

Over 144 professional cyclists will compete in the 9-day, 12-city event, covering more than 750 miles from Northern to Southern California.  A few years ago when organizers compared the race to the Tour de France it was bravado, but the event has now started to gain major international attention and recognition.

"Autograph Alley" will take place if it rains or if it's clear: Cyclists will begin arriving at 7:30 AM on Spinnaker Drive and are available for photographs and autographs.

The Race Route Through Sausalito

Downtown Sausalito: 7:30 AM Preparations – 8:30 AM Start

Caledonia Street: 8:30 AM.  Spectators on Caledonia and on Bridgeway between Spinnaker and Caledonia will get to see the cyclists go past twice.

Bridgeway to Second St. and up Alexander Ave. and the Sausalito Lateral: 8:30 - 8:45 AM.  The cyclists will head south out of town down Bridgeway to Alexander and up to the Golden Gate Bridge.  Watching the climb out of Sausalito to the Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most interesting parts of the race.  The sidewalks and paths along the route will be cordoned off and monitored by course marshals.  The organizers ask that spectators please obey all instructions and stay out of the path of the oncoming cyclists.

Golden Gate Bridge: 8:30 - 9:00 AM
Both the pedestrian (east) side of the bridge and the bicycle (west) side of the bridge will be open.  All spectators will be screened by bridge security personnel.  If you ride your own bike to the event you must walk your bike on the east side and are encouraged to take advantage of the valet bicycle parking (location is TBA).

You can check out our page on Bicycling the Golden Gate Bridge.

To get a great preview of what this year will be like, here's Dave Albee's great article about last year's event.

Tickets on Sale for Tour de Cuisine Dinner Feb. 15

Amgen Tour of California Tour de Cuisine Dinner Feb. 15

Atoc_sausalito_tour This is the fourth year they've held the Tour de Cuisine dinner the night before the Amgen Tour of California bike race Stage Two in Sausalito on Valentine's Day weekend.  The event will run from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM on February 15, the night before the race, and will be held in the Big Bike Tent set up in front of The Spinnaker.  Tickets are $75 per person, and the local charities being supported bny the event are listed below.

They're serving foods from over 25 local restaurants (including desserts!), and will have a local Farmers Market section set up in the tent.  The "Bubble Lounge" will serve champagne and sake.  They say they have invited local farmers market and bicycle celebrities, so you may get to dodge the paparazzi as you enter!

Music and dancing will be provided by the local Beatles cover band "The Sun Kings."  If I recall correctly they're the band we really enjoyed doing Beatles songs at the Sausalito Art Festival.

Proceeds from this Sausalito fundraiser will help underwrite the expense of hosting the Race as well as support Race beneficiaries – Sausalito Bikes for Kids (see below), Trips for Kids and the Marin County Bicycle Coalition.  And if you want to ride with the King and benefit local organizations, check out the chance to cross the Golden Gate Bridge in the peleton with Lance Armstrong.

If you're a morning person rather than a late night denizen, you can also check out the Sausalito Bikers Brunch the following day, February 16.

You can buy tickets to the dinner online here on the Tour of California website.

Since they don't have a website to link to yet, here's more about Sausalito Bikes for Kids: Sausalito Bikes for Kids was established last year to provide age appropriate bicycles for Sausalito/Marin City elementary school children who “earned” new bikes and helmets by completing an educational curriculum that focused on bike safety, health and fitness. Last year 135 children earned brand new bicycles.  This year the proceeds from the program will go to create the first-ever Bike Club at an elementary school in Northern California.  Sausalito school children who complete the educational curriculum this year will be charter members of the the Bike Club which will provide loaner bicycles, bike trips and bike storage at the schools. Share a special gift by donating $50, $100, or $200 towards the Sausalito Bikes for Kids program at 420 Litho Street, Sausalito, CA  94965, phone 415-289-4126.

Tickets for Bikers Brunch at the Amgen Tour of California Feb. 16

Atoc_sausalito_tour If you don't have a spare $500 to ride across the Golden Gate Bridge with 7-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong as part of the Tour of California in Sausalito Feb. 16, we have a consolation prize that's only $25 per person.

After the race starts and the riders are off, these tickets entitle you to watch the entire Stage Two from Sausalito to Santa Cruz in the Big Bike Tent (in front of the Spinnaker) via a live satellite feed shown on big screen TV.

The race start is at 8:30 AM, earlier than last year.  The starting line is in front of the Spinnaker, followed by two parade loops down Caledonia Street before they head down Bridgeway, 2nd St., Alexander and The Sausalito Lateral to go over the Golden Gate Bridge.  This will be the first time ever that a bike race has crossed the Bridge.

The brunch buffet is hosted by The Spinnaker Restaurant, which has earned a highest-possible "9 Sea Lion" rating from ComeToSausalito.com

Tickets for the buffet can be purchased online here on the Tour of California website.

Your ComeToSausalito.com Culture Note:  If you think you've never heard of Alexander Borodin, you'd probably recognize some of his music.  His orchestral dances were used in some of the most famous Bugs Bunny cartoons of the 1940's and 50's by Warner Bros. music director Carl Stalling.
